Sustainability Isn't a Buzzword. It's Our Business Model.

Every IBC tote we recondition saves approximately 60 pounds of HDPE plastic from entering a landfill. Manufacturing a new IBC container generates roughly 150 kg of CO2. By choosing reconditioned, you cut that carbon footprint by up to 75%. We don't just sell containers — we close the loop on industrial packaging waste.

Our Sustainability Mission

How It Works: From Used to Like-New

Every IBC tote that passes through our facility follows a rigorous six-step reconditioning process designed to deliver a container you can trust.

01

Collection

Our logistics team picks up used IBC totes from manufacturers, distributors, and businesses across Kentucky and the surrounding tri-state region. We accept containers in virtually any condition, whether they previously held food-grade liquids, industrial chemicals, or agricultural products. Our fleet of flatbed trucks is specifically configured for safe IBC transport, and we coordinate pickup schedules that minimize disruption to your operations. We also accept drop-offs at our Lexington facility for businesses that prefer to bring their containers directly.

02

Assessment

Every incoming IBC tote undergoes a thorough initial inspection by our trained assessment team. We evaluate the structural integrity of the galvanized steel cage, check the HDPE inner bottle for cracks, warping, and UV degradation, and examine the pallet base for rot or breakage. Each container receives a classification that determines its reconditioning path: food-grade eligible, industrial-grade eligible, parts-only salvage, or full recycling. We log the manufacturer, previous contents (when known), date codes, and UN rating to maintain full traceability.

03

Cleaning

Our EPA-compliant cleaning process uses a multi-stage approach tailored to each container's history. The standard process begins with a high-pressure hot water rinse at 180 degrees Fahrenheit to remove residual product, followed by a food-safe detergent wash cycle. Containers destined for food-grade certification receive an additional sanitization step using FDA-approved cleaning agents. All wastewater is captured and processed through our on-site treatment system. We never cut corners on cleaning because the quality of our finished product depends entirely on how thoroughly we remove every trace of previous contents.

04

Grading

After cleaning, each IBC tote is graded on a standardized scale. Grade A containers look nearly new with minimal cosmetic wear, intact labels, and no staining. Grade B containers are fully functional with moderate cosmetic wear such as minor scuffing or discoloration that does not affect performance. Grade C containers are structurally sound but show visible signs of use and are ideal for non-critical storage or agricultural applications. This transparent grading system means you always know exactly what you are purchasing and can choose the right quality level for your specific application and budget.

05

Quality Control

Before any container earns our approval stamp, it passes a rigorous 12-point quality control inspection. This includes a hydrostatic pressure test to check for leaks, a cage tension assessment to verify structural support, valve operation testing, gasket integrity checks, and a final visual inspection under bright lighting. We also verify that all markings and UN ratings are legible. Our rejection rate is intentionally high because we would rather recycle a borderline container than ship one that does not meet our standards. Every tote that leaves our facility carries our quality guarantee.

06

Ready to Ship

Approved containers are fitted with new gaskets and valve seals as needed, tagged with our quality certification label, and moved to our organized inventory yard for immediate fulfillment. We maintain a rolling stock of over 500 containers at any given time so that most orders ship within one to three business days. Our delivery team handles everything from single-tote residential deliveries to full truckload shipments for commercial clients. Every shipment is secured with proper tie-downs and protective measures to ensure your containers arrive in the same condition they left our facility.

Industries We Serve

IBC totes are one of the most versatile industrial containers ever designed. Here are just some of the industries that rely on our reconditioned containers.

Agriculture

Farmers and ranchers across Kentucky rely on IBC totes for bulk water transport to remote pastures, liquid fertilizer storage, pesticide mixing stations, and livestock watering systems. Our food-grade containers are ideal for storing molasses-based feed supplements and organic liquid amendments.

Food & Beverage

Breweries, distilleries, wineries, and food processors use our certified food-grade IBC totes for ingredient storage, juice concentrate handling, and syrup transport. Kentucky's thriving bourbon industry is a major customer for clean, UN-rated containers suitable for non-hazardous liquid storage.

Chemical Manufacturing

Chemical producers and distributors require containers that meet strict UN performance standards for transporting and storing solvents, detergents, and industrial fluids. We supply properly rated IBC totes with compatible valve materials and maintain full chain-of-custody documentation.

Construction

Construction sites use IBC totes for dust suppression water, concrete curing, equipment washdown stations, and temporary potable water storage for crews. Our durable industrial-grade containers withstand the rigors of active job sites and can be returned to us for recycling when the project wraps up.

Water Management

Municipal water departments, irrigation companies, and stormwater management firms use our totes for emergency water distribution, rainwater harvesting systems, and gray water recycling setups. We also supply containers configured as settling tanks for sediment control on construction sites.

Automotive

Auto shops, fleet maintenance facilities, and car washes use IBC totes to store bulk quantities of windshield washer fluid, coolant, motor oil, and degreasing agents. Buying fluids in bulk via IBC totes reduces per-gallon costs by 30 to 50 percent compared to smaller containers.

Homesteading & DIY

Homesteaders, hobby farmers, and DIY enthusiasts are among our fastest-growing customer segments. They use IBC totes for rainwater collection, aquaponics systems, raised garden beds, compost tea brewers, maple sap collection, and off-grid water storage. Our cut-down tote kits make project setup simple.

Emergency Preparedness

Families, community organizations, and local governments stockpile food-grade IBC totes as part of emergency water storage plans. A single 275-gallon tote provides enough drinking water for a family of four for over two months. We supply new caps and gaskets to ensure airtight, long-term storage.

What Our Customers Use IBC Totes For

From backyard homesteads to large-scale commercial operations, the applications for IBC totes are nearly limitless. Here are twelve of the most popular use cases among our customers.

Rainwater Harvesting

Capture and store rooftop runoff for garden irrigation, livestock watering, or emergency reserves. A standard 275-gallon IBC tote connected to a gutter downspout can fill completely during a single moderate rainstorm, providing weeks of irrigation water for a large vegetable garden.

Bulk Liquid Storage

Store diesel fuel, heating oil, lubricants, or cleaning agents in properly rated IBC containers. The integrated pallet base allows easy forklift handling, and the 2-inch butterfly valve provides controlled dispensing without pumps for gravity-fed applications.

Aquaponics & Hydroponics

IBC totes are the backbone of most DIY aquaponics systems. The top section serves as a grow bed filled with expanded clay media, while the bottom section houses the fish tank. A single tote, properly cut, creates a complete closed-loop growing system that produces both fresh vegetables and fish protein.

Compost Tea Brewing

Organic farmers brew large batches of actively aerated compost tea in IBC totes fitted with air stones and recirculation pumps. The 275-gallon capacity produces enough microbial-rich tea to treat several acres of cropland in a single application, dramatically improving soil biology and plant health.

Mobile Wash Stations

Pressure washing contractors mount IBC totes on utility trailers to create mobile water supply units. The gravity-fed bottom valve connects directly to most commercial pressure washers, providing a self-contained wash station that can be deployed anywhere without access to municipal water.

Maple Sap Collection

Kentucky's maple syrup producers use IBC totes as central collection points in their sugarbush operations. Sap lines from dozens of tapped trees feed into a food-grade IBC tote positioned at a low point, which is then transported to the evaporator for processing.

Dust Suppression

Gravel roads, construction sites, and mining operations require regular water application to control dust. IBC totes mounted on flatbed trucks with spray bar attachments provide a cost-effective alternative to purpose-built water trucks, especially for smaller operations.

Spill Containment

Modified IBC totes serve as secondary containment basins for hazardous material storage areas. We fabricate custom cut-down tote bases that meet EPA secondary containment requirements, providing a regulation-compliant solution at a fraction of the cost of commercially manufactured containment pallets.

Livestock Watering

Cattle, horse, and goat operations use IBC totes as gravity-fed water reservoirs connected to float-valve troughs. A single 275-gallon tote provides enough water for approximately 15 cattle per day, and the steel cage protects the inner bottle from animal damage.

Fire Suppression Reserves

Rural properties beyond municipal fire hydrant service maintain IBC totes as on-site fire suppression water reserves. Multiple totes can be manifolded together for larger capacity, and the 2-inch valve provides sufficient flow for portable fire pumps used by volunteer fire departments.

Car Wash Water Recycling

Commercial car wash operators use IBC totes as settling tanks in water reclamation systems. Wash water flows through a series of connected totes where sediment settles out progressively, allowing the reclaimed water to be filtered and reused, reducing municipal water consumption by up to 80 percent.

Fertilizer Mixing & Application

Row crop farmers and lawn care professionals mix bulk liquid fertilizer in IBC totes equipped with recirculation fittings. The integrated pallet base allows the loaded tote to be moved with a tractor's three-point hitch, and the bottom valve connects directly to sprayer equipment for field application.

What Our Customers Say

Real feedback from farmers, business owners, and DIY enthusiasts across Kentucky who rely on our reconditioned IBC totes.

We switched to reconditioned IBC totes from IBC Kentucky three seasons ago and haven't looked back. The food-grade totes we use for liquid fertilizer storage are just as reliable as new ones, and the cost savings let us invest more in seed stock. Their team even helped us set up a gravity-fed irrigation system.

Dale Whitaker

Row Crop FarmerShelbyville, KY

As a craft brewery, we go through a lot of cleaning chemicals and ingredient syrups. IBC Kentucky keeps us supplied with certified food-grade totes at a price that makes sense for a small operation. Their delivery crew knows our dock schedule and works around our brew days without any hassle.

Rachel Nguyen

Owner, Falls City Craft BrewingLouisville, KY

On a construction site, you need water for dust suppression, concrete curing, and crew washdown stations. We order ten to fifteen industrial-grade totes per project from IBC Kentucky. They show up on time, in solid condition, and when the job wraps they buy them back. The whole cycle just works.

Marcus Stoll

Site Operations Manager, Bluegrass BuildersLexington, KY

I built a complete aquaponics system in my backyard using two IBC totes I bought from these folks. They walked me through which grade I needed, sold me the right valve adapters, and even sent me a diagram for the cut lines. You don't get that kind of service from a big-box store.

Jenny Calloway

Homesteader & DIY EnthusiastBerea, KY

Regulatory compliance is non-negotiable in our industry. IBC Kentucky maintains full chain-of-custody documentation on every container they sell us. Their UN-rated totes meet our transport requirements, and their cleaning process is rigorous enough that we trust the results with our own QC testing.

Common Questions About IBC Totes

Answers to the questions we hear most from first-time buyers, farmers, businesses, and DIY enthusiasts.

What is an IBC tote and what does IBC stand for?

IBC stands for Intermediate Bulk Container. An IBC tote is a reusable industrial container designed for the transport and storage of bulk liquid and granulated substances. Standard IBC totes consist of a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) inner bottle supported by a galvanized steel cage frame, all mounted on an integrated pallet base. They typically hold 275 or 330 gallons and are designed to be handled by forklifts and pallet jacks. IBC totes are regulated under UN packaging standards and must meet specific performance criteria for the type of material they carry.

Are your used IBC totes safe for storing drinking water?

Yes, our food-grade IBC totes that have been properly cleaned and certified are safe for potable water storage. We only certify totes as food-grade if they previously contained food-safe substances such as juices, syrups, vinegar, or food-grade oils. These containers are made from FDA-compliant HDPE plastic and undergo our full cleaning and sanitization protocol. We do not recommend using containers that previously held chemicals, even after cleaning, for drinking water. Always check that your tote carries the FDA and food-grade designation before using it for potable water.

How long do reconditioned IBC totes last?

A properly reconditioned IBC tote has a typical service life of 5 to 10 additional years depending on usage conditions and what materials are stored in it. The HDPE inner bottle is naturally resistant to most chemicals and does not corrode, but it will degrade over time with prolonged UV exposure. We recommend keeping totes out of direct sunlight when possible, or wrapping them with UV-resistant material for outdoor installations. The galvanized steel cage can last 15 to 20 years or more with basic maintenance. Replacing gaskets and valve seals every 2 to 3 years will maximize the useful life of your tote.

What is the difference between 275-gallon and 330-gallon IBC totes?

The primary difference is capacity and height. A standard 275-gallon IBC tote measures approximately 48 inches long by 40 inches wide by 46 inches tall and weighs about 135 pounds empty. A 330-gallon IBC tote has the same footprint but stands approximately 53 inches tall, providing an additional 55 gallons of capacity at roughly 160 pounds empty. The 330-gallon size is common in food and beverage applications where maximizing volume per pallet position is important. Both sizes fit a standard pallet footprint and are compatible with the same forklifts and pallet jacks.

Do you deliver, and what areas do you cover?

Yes, we provide delivery throughout the entire state of Kentucky as well as southern Indiana, southern Ohio, and parts of West Virginia and Tennessee. Our fleet of flatbed trucks can handle single-tote deliveries for residential customers as well as full truckload shipments of 20 or more totes for commercial accounts. Delivery pricing depends on distance, quantity, and whether you need liftgate service. Most deliveries within a 100-mile radius of Lexington ship for a flat rate. Contact us for a delivery quote along with your product order.

Can I sell my used IBC totes to you?

Absolutely. We operate an active buyback program and purchase used IBC totes in any condition. Clean, single-use food-grade totes command the highest buyback prices, but we also purchase totes with residual product, damaged cages, and even containers that are only suitable for recycling. We offer pickup service for quantities of five or more totes within our delivery area, or you can drop off any quantity at our Lexington facility during business hours. Contact us with photos and a description of your totes for an immediate buyback quote.

What is your return policy on used IBC totes?

We stand behind every container we sell with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you receive a tote that does not meet the grade and specifications described at the time of purchase, contact us within 30 days for a full replacement or refund. Because these are used containers, normal cosmetic wear such as minor scuffs, label residue, and cage surface rust is expected and does not qualify for returns. We include detailed photos of each tote or batch before shipping so you know exactly what to expect.

How should I prepare an IBC tote for food-grade water storage?

Even though our food-grade totes arrive cleaned and sanitized, we recommend a final rinse with a dilute bleach solution (one tablespoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water) before filling with potable water. Fill the tote completely with the bleach solution, let it sit for 30 minutes, then drain and rinse twice with clean water. Install a new cap with a solid gasket, seal it tightly, and store the filled tote in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight. Properly stored water in a clean HDPE tote remains safe for 6 to 12 months. Rotate your supply by using and refilling periodically.
