General IBC Tote Questions

An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote is a reusable industrial container for storing and transporting bulk liquids. It consists of a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) inner bottle inside a galvanized steel cage, mounted on a pallet. Standard sizes are 275 gallons (1,040 liters) and 330 gallons (1,250 liters). They're used across industries including agriculture, food & beverage, chemicals, and manufacturing.

Yes, when properly cleaned and inspected. At IBC Kentucky, every used tote goes through our 5-step reconditioning process: assessment, residual removal, triple rinse, high-pressure wash, and leak testing. We grade each tote (A, B, or C) and clearly label whether it's food-grade certified or industrial-only. We never sell a tote we wouldn't use ourselves.

Food-grade IBC totes have been manufactured and/or cleaned to FDA-compliant standards for contact with food products. They're typically made from virgin HDPE plastic and carry UN/DOT ratings. Industrial totes may have contained chemicals, soaps, or other non-food substances. We clearly label every tote's grade and previous-use history.

A well-maintained IBC tote can last 5-7 years or more through multiple use cycles. The HDPE bottle is UV-resistant and chemically stable. The galvanized steel cage resists corrosion. With proper care — avoid prolonged sun exposure, don't overfill, and use appropriate contents for the tote's rating — these containers are built to endure.

Only food-grade certified totes should be used for potable water storage, and even then, we recommend using a dedicated water-grade tote that has never held chemicals. For non-potable water uses like irrigation, rainwater collection, or livestock watering, any cleaned tote in good condition will work well.
